Wildflowers of Zion National Park

Wildflower Walk - July 5, 2010 - page 2

Location:Middle Taylor Creek
Prior Weather:Hot and Dry the previous 4 weeks
Paticipants:Tom Jones
Time of Day:Afternoon

This nice plant was in reasonable abundance right next to the stream. I'm a bit uncertain, but my guess is:

Rattleweed milkvetch - Astragalus sabulosus

Guess I'll have to come back in a month or two and see if it forms the characteristic "rattle" seedpods!

Closeup of the flower - not in the prime of bloom.

Flower and leaves together...

A fine example of: Butterfly Weed - Asclepias tuberosa l. - Milkweed Family (Asclepiadaceae)

Butterfly weed flower closeup.

The ever-present Fragrant Sand Verbana - Ambronia fragrans, Four-O'clock Family - Nyctaginaceae

... though this specimen looks a little bit dessicated!

Also fairly widespread, in areas with water:

Tall Evening Primrose - Oenothera longissima Rydb. / Evening Primrose Family - Onagraceae

On this one, Derrick from Phoenix really impressed. My pics are not very explicit, but he ID'd it as:

Big Sandwort - Eremogone macradenia (formerly known as Arenaria macradenia) / Caryophyllaceae

... and a closeup of the flowers of the same.

Another plant a mile or more away, but it appears to be the same.
