Wildflowers of Zion National Park

Wildflower Walk - July 16, 2010 - "A" - Page 2

Location:Wildcat Trailhead, Kolob Terrace Road, 6800 feet
Prior Weather:Hot and Dry the previous 4 weeks
Paticipants:Tom Jones
Time of Day:Morning

Here's a nice one - there were several to quite a few clumps of these within reach of the trail. Wyoming Dave ID'd this as

Sticky Geranium - Geranium viscosissimum / Geranium Family - Geraniaceae.

The pointy leaves seem to indicate the viscosissimum as opposed to the caespitosum - although I will try to check for stickiness next time I am up that way...

UPDATE: However, further analysis indicates the leaf shape is not definitive (nor is the stickiness) and, a few weeks later I found the smaller Sticky Geranium off in the woods off Lava Point. So let's ID this one as

Purple Wild Geranium - Geranium caespitosum / Geranium Family - Geraniaceae.

Here's a closeup of the leaves.

And here's the overall plant.

Looks like the flower is about 1-1/4" across.

The plant looks to be about 12" tall.

A pretty little new on on me -

Large-flowered Collomia - Collomia grandiflora - Flox family - Polemoniaceae

Probably?

Flowers 3/4" across.

Scattered single flowers 10" tall.

Here's a good look at the overall plant.
