Location:Lava Point Campground Area, 7900 feet
Prior Weather:Hot and Dry the previous 4 weeks
Paticipants:Tom Jones
Time of Day:Morning

Yellow Salsify (Yellow Goat's Beard) - Tragopogan dubius - Aster family - Asteraceae

An old favorite, up at this altitude, still a few in bloom hiding in the woods.

Reference: Yellow Salsify at Sacred Cliffs

... and protected from the wind, allowing lots of depth of field.

But let's zoom in superclose...

Here's a white flower - looks like:

Wild Buckwheat - Eriogonum racemosum / Buckwheat Family - Polygonaceae

References: Wild Buckwheat at SW Colorado Wildflowers

There is an Eriogonum racemosum Nutt. var. zionis (J. T. Howell) Welsh (aka Zion buckwheat), but... it is only noted up to 7000 feet, and the source, Utah Rare Plants, does not have a good picture of the leaves, etc.

Here's what the raceme looks like.

Each flower is 3/8" across.

The overall plant 20" tall.

And the leaves, about 2-1/2" long, 1-1/2" wide.

There was a fair amount of Yarrow - Achillea millefolium scattered around in the woods.

And the common, invasive Yellow Sweet Clover - Meliotus officinalis just getting a foot hold here in the high-altitude woods.

but doing better in the disturbed soil of the campground.
