Zion - Das Boot / Wildflowers (page 2) - April 2008

Another very common flower, Phlox.

And a closeup of the flower. Some disagreement out there on exact designation. The Zion Wildflowers book (Stanley Welsh, ZNHA 1990) identifies it as Phlox austromontana Coville, var. jonesii; while another source suggests it is Phlox hoodii. It says:
Phlox hoodii and Phlox austromontana are very similar. P. hoodii has flowers about 1/3 smaller than those of P. austromontana and its leaves tend to be smaller and more densely clustered along the stem. Several distinguishing factors require a hand lens to note: the calyx of P. hoodii is quite hairy and is not keeled between the main lobes, P. austromontana calyx is not hairy and is keeled.

Hmmmm. Interesting. Web sources vary. Who woulda thought? Flower forms vary. If I understood the above paragraph, I might could figure it out. etc. Insight would be appreciated.

Another view of the pond, with the Ponderosa Pines reflected.

Another common yellow flower... Zion Draba

...with a closeup of the flower head.

Draba asprella Greene var. zionensis
Family: Brassicaceae (brass-ih-KAY-see-ay) Burnett, 1835, nom. cons. - Mustard Family

And that's today's wildflower lesson...
