Directions to the East Mesa Trailhead: For Mystery Canyon, save yourself a big uphill hike and use the East Mesa Trailhead. Access is via dirt roads outside the park, but with a little driving skill, even 2WD cars can make it there if they have average or better clearance. And remember, nothing drives like a rental. The drive takes about 30 minutes each way. From Springdale or Zion Canyon, take Route 9 East toward Mt Carmel Junction. 12 Miles from Springdale, the road exits the Park at the East Entrance. There is a small store and gas station about 2 miles past the entrance. At 2.4 miles, turn Left (N) on a paved road signed for "North Fork". Hit the odometer. Follow the paved winding road 5.1 miles to the Zion Ponderosa Ranch - turn left into the Ranch. The Zion Ponderosa is a large landholding on the east border of the park. It includes a resort (motel) with pool, climbing tower, etc, and family cabins sprinkled across the expanse. From the entrance, hit the odometer - mileages are from the Ranch Entrance. The roads are rough and not well-signed. Please be respectful of any residents you encounter - afoot, en-ATV, on horse or in cars. The few turns that are marked, are signed for "Observation Point". 0.0 miles: At the entrance, go straight (avoid going down to the main resort building to the left) past a residence. The pavement ends. 0.4 miles: Y - go Right. 0.7 miles: T - go Right for Observation Point (Twin Knolls Road). 1.5 miles: T - go Right. 2.3 miles: Fir Road crosses - go straight. 2.6 miles: Deeply rutted hill - this is the worst spot. Some 2WDs will want to park at a single spot at the top of the hill. 2.65 miles: Big Pine in center of road, rough. Go Left around pine, then Right down the hill. 2.9 miles: Y - go Left for Mystery Canyon, Right for Englestead. 3.0 miles: End of Road at Park Boundary: park at numerous places in the woods. Englestead: 3.1 miles: turn Right on ATV Trail. 3.3 miles: road comes in on right, go straight. 3.6 miles: end of road, park.
