2001 Permitted User-Days by Activity
Zion National Park Backcountry Permit Information

Backcountry Permits were required in 2001 for all backcountry overnight stays, for all technical canyon usage (both day and overnight), and for the Narrows from the top, both day and overnight. Permits were also required for boating in the North Fork of the Virgin River in the Park, though this usage is very small. Group size was limited to 12. Permits cost 5 dollars per permit.

Permit information was compiled on a monthly basis for most of the popular canyons and camping areas. Since we are primarily interested in the technical narrow canyons, I will focus my attentions on that data, but let's look at the overall permit program first:
