Kolob Creek and Imlay Canyon, Zion National Park
Went down to Zion National Park for a slow trip through Kolob Canyon and Imlay Canyon. This was a four-photographer gig, with Chris Avery shooting the most square inches of film, Lin Alder shooting the most images, and... Well, we all get what we get. My best shots are below.
Our protagonist – Chris Avery, sweating it up on the approach to Imlay. There are few people strong enough to carry 30 lbs of camera gear in addition to their share – but Chris can and smile the whole day.
Lin Alder all dressed in black. Must be an artist! Check out his other work at Lin Alder Photography.
And our hired Sherpa, Tom Wetherell from Tucson probably got the best photos of the trip with his nice little digital camera.
And into Kolob. Was running at 3 cfs, a pleasant trickle. Here’s the first waterfall in Kolob Creek.
Lin rapping one of the early drops…
And trying to hold still…
A fuzzy picture of an interesting anchor. Five bolts, couple of them really ancient. Interesting way to backup with the spectra sling and biner…
Chris in one of the less technical sections
Kolob Creek is all bolted up, originally by Dennis Turville in the 70’s, but there are quite a few generations of bolts in this canyon. Some scary, some pretty solid.
Here’s the scary one. Two old strap hangers, one Star Dryvin, one ???
Hope it wasn’t for this drop!
Got the BLUR going here – the Imlay Canyon Gear Heaps Pack and Chris Avery in motion in Kolob Canyon.
Tom Wetherell rapping some drop in Zion.
This was a nice double-pool drop with a face shot on the second drop. Cooool!
The big final rappel in Kolob Creek. A nice shiney black wall.
Chris Avery floating in that last pool. Floating disconnect? Then we had the delight of the MIA trail, and back to town.
Lin was nice enough to host us at his beautiful house in Springdale. It was rough…
The next day: Imlay Canyon! Uh, well maybe after a day of lounging around town…
Anyway – here’s a nice arch on the way through the sneak canyon to Imlay.
And a demonstration of the American Death Triangle on our first anchor in Imlay. We re-rigged… not like the bolts really inspire confidence.
Lin doing the very technical crawl-under-the-boulder trick.
